IT IS UP TO US IF WE GO ON AS IS: Ruth Laxson’s Persitent Muse

The current exhibition of Ruth Laxson’s artist’s books and bookmaking process archives, on display at the Fleet Library at RISD from May 9-July 3, 2008, will be coming down tomorrow afternoon, July 3. Research notes, preliminary sketches, collages, mock-ups and camera-ready work accompany a selection of sixteen of her handmade books. Ruth Laxson, an Atlanta based artist, started making artist’s books in the early 1980’s, at the age of 63, and is known for her quirky visual poetry, playful use of text and image, and her highly relevant social and political commentaries. The RISD exhibition is in conjunction with an exhibition of Ruth’s prints, drawings, paintings and sculptures entitled, “Life is a Page: Ruth Laxson, past and present 1965-2008″ at the Marcia Wood Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. Exhibition catalogs are available for both exhibition venues. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the work of this extraordinary woman!
