Tomorrow Counts

Like everyone across the world, I’m wondering what will happen in tomorrow’s election. And then, my attention turns to asking the more important question of what will happen afterwards when the new President enters office. I realize that selecting a leader is an important responsibility and an extremely difficult task. Accepting a leader once he or she is in office is oddly even harder to do.

One would think that the act of selecting a new leader is all we need to do to see ourselves as living in a whole new world. But with all change that is meaningful, it has to be personal. Meaning that the change has to happen inside ourselves for it to be real.

Whatever comes tomorrow will be meaningless unless we all become someone new ourselves. We should ask within each of us here in the States not “What have we become?” and dwell too much in the past, but instead to wonder, “What can we become?” I’ll be wondering along with all of you.
