Great Global Honorees Coming to Campus

Every year at Commencement RISD honors roughly 650 undergrad and grad degree candidates, along with a handful of standouts in art, design, education and culture who have made a phenomenal impact on their fields and the world at large.

This year’s slate of honorary degree recipients is totally amazing, starting with Chinese architect Wang Shu, the newly announced recipient of the 2012 Pritzer Prize, who will also deliver RISD’s Commencement address. (His design of the Ningbo [China] History Museum is shown above, and you’ll find more delicious images of his work on the Pritzker site.)

Author, activist and all-around deep thinker Rebecca Solnit will also accept an honorary degree at RISD’s June 2 ceremony.

And last, but far from least, the incredible Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli, whose latest film The Secret World of Arrietty just hit US theaters last month, will send producer Toshio Suzuki to RISD to collect the award on behalf of his colleagues, animator and director Hayao Miyazaki and director Isao Takahata.
