Loving Lunch Ladies

Author/illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka 99 IL has declared today – May 3 – national School Lunch Superhero Day.

Jarrett is also excited that NPR is featuring his goofy Lunch Lady series as its May Kids’ Book Club. Inspired by one of his own grade school lunch ladies, the graphic novels have sold 350,000 copies, won two Children’s Choice Book Awards and been optioned by Universal Pictures for a live action film starring Amy Poehler.

NPR has this to say about the series:

“Yes, these are fun, fired-up graphic stories that kids consume like popcorn. But they – like their author – have a sneaky depth that parents and kids alike can appreciate. Krosoczka brings both energy and tenderness to his writing….”

And if that’s not enough good news for Jarrett this month, his book Platypus Police Squad: The Frog Who Croaked – the first in a series of high-octane middle-grade mysteries featuring platypus police detectives – is ready to ship out to eager fans starting on Tuesday.

Check out this article in yesterday’s Boston Globe for more on Jarrett.
