At the end of Wintersession last week students in RISD’s first theatrical design studio – co-taught by Sculpture Critic Jane South and Interior Architecture Critic Michael McGarty – gave visitors a backstage peek inside The Magic Box, an all-new ballet that will premiere this spring in Providence. As part of RISD’s newly launched Robert L. Turner Theatrical and Performance Design initiative, students collaborated with the Providence Ballet Theatre company to design sets and costumes that support the larger vision of the piece. During the performances in April, dancers will engage with the student-designed set pieces (shown above) and wear costumes inspired by Greek mythology as the ballet’s main character struggles to resolve his inner conflict and reach enlightenment.

For more information on the collaboration, see Making Magic on the site.
